Levocabastine

Definition

Levocabastine is a drug from the group of so-called antihistamines. They are mainly used in the treatment of seasonal, allergic complaints such as hay fever. Preparations containing levocabastine are available as eye drops or nasal sprays, but only rarely as tablets. They are only available in pharmacies but without a prescription.

Effect

Histamine is a substance of the body, which is secreted more frequently, especially in allergic reactions. Normally the substance causes an inflammatory reaction in the body by dilating the vessels. The widening of the blood vessels causes more blood to flow in (reddening of the skin), as well as the infiltration of inflammation mediators.

Among other things, histamine is released whenever pathogens have entered the body and need to be fought. In the case of an allergy, histamine is released in excessive quantities and leads to an excessive reaction in the body. The result is watery eyes, runny noses, itchy skin and, if there is a severe allergic reaction, shortness of breath.

Levocabastine inhibits the histamine on the one hand in its release and on the other hand the already released histamine in its effect. Histamine is also responsible for the waking and sleeping rhythm and also has tasks in digestive processes. Taking levocabastine leads relatively quickly to a positive effect and reduces swelling of the nasal mucous membranes and soothes the conjunctiva of the eyes. Levocabastine is today mostly used as eye drops, nose drops or as a combination preparation.

Side effects

Since levocabastine reduces the effect of histamine, it also leads to opposite effects of histamine. Via sleep/wake control, inhibition of histamine also leads to fatigue. Although this is much more pronounced with antihistamines taken in tablet form, these symptoms can also occur with prolonged use of levocabastine eye drops or nasal sprays.

In addition, local irritation of the conjunctiva or nasal mucous membranes may also occur, which usually occurs after the first intake. Eye pain and blurred vision may also occur when taking levocabastine. Very often headaches occur after taking levocabastine. If this is the case, consideration should be given to discontinuing treatment with the drug.
