MDA is one of the narcotics and banned substances in many countries. It is not commercially available. MDA was first synthesized in 1910.

Structure and properties

Methylenedioxyamphetamine (C10H13NO2, Mr = 179.2 g/mol) is a 3,4-methylenedioxy derivative of amphetamine. It is structurally closely related to ecstasy (methylenedioxymethamphetamine, MDMA). Some ecstasy tablets contain MDA instead of MDMA. MDA exists as a racemate.

Effects

MDA has psychoactive, hallucinogenic, empathogenic, and stimulant properties. The effects are based on interaction with neurotransmitter systems in the central nervous system (serotonin, norepinephrine, dopamine).

Indications

No medical indications for use exist.

Abuse

MDA is abused as a narcotic, hallucinogen, and party drug. It is strongly discouraged because of the potential adverse effects. Deaths have been reported. The singer of , Scott Weiland, died in December 2015 from a drug cocktail that contained MDA as well as alcohol and cocaine.
