MMR Vaccination

Products

The MMR vaccine is commercially available as an injectable. Vaccination has been recommended in many countries since the 1980s. Some preparations also contain the chickenpox vaccine (= MMRV vaccine).

Effects

MMR (ATC J07BD52) is a live vaccine consisting of attenuated measles, mumps, and rubella viruses. These childhood diseases can cause significant complications and numerous deaths have been reported worldwide. Protection against the diseases ranges from 90% to 98%.

Indications

For active immunization against measles, mumps, and rubella.

Dosage

According to the drug label. According to the Swiss vaccine flan, the first vaccination should be given at the age of 12 months and the second vaccination at the age of 15-24 months. An interval of at least one month must be observed. The drug is usually administered intramuscularly.

Contraindications

The drug is contraindicated in hypersensitivity to ingredients and excipients, in fever, in immunodeficiency, and during pregnancy. For complete precautions, see the drug label.

Interactions

MMR vaccine should not be administered concomitantly with immunoglobulin. However, concurrent pediatric vaccination (eg, DTPa-IPV+Hib vaccination) is possible.

Adverse effects

The most common adverse effects include fever, flu-like symptoms, and local reactions at the injection site such as redness, pain, bruising, and swelling. For example, a paracetamol suppository may be administered to treat the fever. A rash similar to measles often occurs. Occasionally, infections, indigestion, and hypersensitivity reactions may occur. Complications such as pneumonia and middle ear infection are rare. Extremely rare cases of brain inflammation have been reported. Today, MMR vaccination is known not to cause autism, as reported in a scientific journal.
