Nephrotic Syndrome: Medical History

Medical history (history of illness) represents an important component in the diagnosis of nephrotic syndrome.

Family history

  • Is there a history of frequent kidney disease in your family?

Social history

  • What is your profession?
  • Are they exposed to harmful agents in your profession?

Current medical history/systemic medical history (somatic and psychological complaints).

  • Have you noticed water retention on the body? Morning swelling of the eyelids, lower legs, etc.?
  • Have you noticed blood in the urine?
  • Have you noticed any other symptoms such as headaches?

Vegetative anamnesis including nutritional anamnesis.

  • Has your body weight changed unintentionally?
  • Has urine changed in color, quantity, odor, etc.?

Self history including medication history.

Drug history

  • Bisphosphonates (v .a. palmindronate).
  • D-penicillamine (chelating agent)
  • Interferon
  • Lithium
  • NSAIDs (non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs)
  • Rifampicin (tuberculostatic drug)
