Nizatidine is not commercially available in many countries and Germany. In the United States, capsules and film-coated tablets, among other products, have been on the market since 1992.
Structure and properties
Nizatidine (C12H21N5O2S2, Mr = 331.5 g/mol) is a thiazole derivative and an organic cation. It exists as a white crystalline substance that is soluble in water. Nizatidine has a bitter taste and smells slightly of sulfur.
Effects
Nizatidine (ATC A02BA04) inhibits the secretion of gastric acid and pepsin in the stomach. Effects are due to selective antagonism at histamine H2 receptors. Effects last up to 12 hours.
Indications
For the treatment of acid-related disorders:
- Gastric and intestinal ulcer
- Esophagitis

Contraindications

Interactions
Nizatidine does not interact with CYP450 and, unlike cimetidine, has a low interaction potential. Raising gastric pH may affect the absorption and bioavailability of other drugs.
Adverse effects
The most common potential adverse effects include anemia and urticaria.
