Norethisterone is commercially available in tablet form (Primolut N). It has been approved in many countries since 1959. Micronovum and Trinovum were withdrawn from the market in many countries in 2013.
Structure and properties
Norethisterone (C20H26O2, Mr = 298.4 g/mol) exists as a white to yellowish white crystalline powder that is practically insoluble in water. See also under norethisterone acetate.
Effects
Norethisterone (ATC G03AC01) has progestogenic and contraceptive properties.
Indications
- Hormonal contraception
- Dysfunctional bleeding, primary and secondary amenorrhea, menstrual postponement.
