Orthosis

The use of an orthosis is becoming increasingly important in the treatment of elbow dislocation. The assumption that successful therapy should be accompanied by early mobilization means that the use of a plaster cast for immobilization is becoming more and more obsolete. An orthosis in general is a medical aid which is intended to stabilize, protect, relieve and support the mobility of the damaged body part.

The most important difference to a plaster cast is therefore that the joint is not completely immobilized but allows a certain, desired degree of movement. With the elbow orthosis, for example, the so-called ROM (range of motion) can be adjusted. This means that the treating physician can individually adjust the permitted forearm rotation (supination and pronation), as well as the flexion and extension (flexion and extension) on the elbow orthosis.

The advantage of this type of orthosis is that the patient can still use the arm in everyday life within the permitted range. This ensures that the long period of immobilization does not lead to stiffening of the individual structures in the elbow joint. This early mobilization is intended to support and accelerate the healing process. The orthosis is usually worn day and night, at least during the first few weeks.

An example of an elbow orthosis is the ROM elbow orthosis. If an orthosis is suitable for you, it will be prescribed by your doctor. The physician also determines the length of time the orthosis is to be worn and whether an individual orthosis may have to be made. Health insurance companies normally cover the costs of prescribing an orthosis.

Summary

Basically, the physiotherapeutic treatment and the exercises applied during it are based on the extent and the chosen therapeutic method by the treating physician. In general, during the first physiotherapy session, a detailed conversation and a physical examination are conducted in order to plan the next steps of rehabilitation in the best possible way and to develop a therapy plan that is tailored to the patient. In this way, not only can the pain be controlled promptly, but also the mobility and full resilience of the elbow can be completely restored in the ideal case. It is important that the patients bring a lot of discipline and stamina.
