Other accompanying symptoms

Pain during sexual intercourse is collected under the term “dyspareunia”. In combination with burning, dyspareunia indicates an inflammatory event. This should be all the more reason to have the underlying cause promptly clarified by an appropriate doctor.

Itching in combination with burning sensation during or after sexual intercourse is the most likely indication of an allergic, hypersensitive and highly inflammatory event. Autoimmune diseases of the skin and mucous membranes (diseases from the pemphigus group) are also rarely considered. Regardless of how severe the itching is, it should not be given in, because scratching or rubbing the genitals would only worsen the inflammation.

In sexually transmitted diseases, severe itching can also occur as a further symptom in addition to burning. If a burning sensation occurs during or after sexual intercourse after a known fungal infection has already been diagnosed and treated, this indicates that the therapy has not been successful. It may be necessary to repeat the therapy with the same antimycotic (antifungal agent), but in increased doses, or another fungus or generally another pathogen must be considered.

It is also possible that the fungal infection has healed, but the mucous membrane has not yet completely “recovered” and intercourse has been started again too early. In this case, reference can be made to the treating physician, who, depending on the extent of the illness, e.g. inflammation, can advise how long one should remain abstinent after the therapy. During pregnancy, the female body is subject to a number of hormonal changes, which can, for example, favour the occurrence of a fungal infection.

Regardless of the genesis of the burning sensation as a symptom, the person affected should urgently have this clarified by a doctor. As already mentioned, some pathogens, which are primarily located in the vulva or vagina, can ascend into the inner genital area or abdominal cavity and under certain circumstances even lead to discharge and miscarriage. Apart from this warning, reference should be made to the general possible causes in women.

Caesarean section is a physically and emotionally drastic measure for the female body. Psychological factors such as depression and adaptation disorders, diseases from the somatoform (psychosomatic) group of forms can cause insufficient lubrication (“getting wet”) and cause a burning sensation during or after sexual intercourse. But also structural conditions during an operation can be considered separately as causes here.

For example, a one-time catheterization of the urinary tract may have caused or promoted a urinary tract infection. Or disinfectant or material components have come into contact with the genitals before or during the birth process, which can be caused by various mechanisms, such as irritation, allergy, inflammation, etc. etc.

, which have led to a subsequent burning sensation. Above all, however, one should be warned against underestimating the symptom, as here too, similar to pregnancy, the burning sensation as a symptom can be caused by an infection and must be clarified. Particularly with a surgical wound such as that of a caesarean section, caution should be exercised here.
