Pain situations

When sitting, many diseases and tension in the lumbar spine area make back pain worse. The reason for this is an increased load on the spine with the body weight. This can be a typical sign of a slipped disc, for example.

However, the cause is often less severe and the pain is load-dependent. In most cases, it is already very helpful to ensure a correct sitting posture. A strengthened musculature of the back is also important.

In addition, office workers, for example, should ensure that they get enough exercise during the day to relieve the lumbar spine. This topic might be of interest to you:

In some cases, back pain in the lumbar spine occurs mainly when lying down and is intensified by this. Since the muscles are less strained when lying down, the muscles may become shorter when lying down for longer periods.

This is due to the fact that muscles can regress if they are not used enough. This can aggravate various limitations, such as tension, but also herniated discs. However, there are also diseases, such as spinal stenosis, in which the pain becomes better when lying down.

This is a narrowing of the spinal canal, which is somewhat widened again when lying down. If back pain in the lumbar spine occurs especially in the morning after sleeping, there are various reasons for this. The most common cause is an incorrect sleeping position.

If the spinal column cannot relax and relieve itself sufficiently, tension or already existing pain is significantly increased. Therefore, a back-friendly mattress should be ensured. Various pillows can also correct the sleeping position.

Back pain occurring in the morning can also be an indication of a rheumatic illness. Often here also still different joints are concerned, which hurt particularly in the morning. In such cases a doctor should be consulted for clarification.

Sometimes it happens that back pain occurs in the lumbar spine area, especially in the evening or at night while sleeping. They can become so severe that the person concerned wakes up and then has problems falling asleep again. A possible cause is an unfavorable sleeping position for the back, which leads to muscle tension and irritation of the nerves.

This can be improved by a back-friendly mattress and sleeping pillow. Another possible cause is Bekhterev’s disease, in which the pelvic joints become inflamed and transfer the pain to the back. It happens to many people in the course of their lives that they perform an awkward or unfamiliar movement during sports and suddenly experience back pain.

The lumbar spine is often affected during sports where you have to bend down or squat. During weight training and weightlifting, it is therefore particularly important to ensure that the lumbar spine is relieved. However, other sports, such as field hockey or gymnastics, can also put a lot of strain on the lower back.

The pain is most often caused by muscle tension, pulled muscles and possibly pinched nerves. They are often of a stabbing nature and can often be completely cured by rest, massage or physiotherapy. However, torn ligaments or other more serious injuries are also possible causes. In case of severe pain that does not improve even after several days, an orthopedist should be consulted. In addition, it is always advisable to strengthen the back with specific exercises during regular sports.
