Pain under the collarbone
Pain under the collarbone can have different causes. The subclavian muscle lies directly under the clavicle. It is often involved in pain in the arm or shoulder due to trigger points.
The tips of the lungs are located under the clavicle. If there is pneumonia at the tip, it can also cause pain under the collarbone. In addition, respiratory distress, coughing and fever usually occur.
Other diseases of the lung, such as pleurisy or a lung tumor in the tip can also cause discomfort. A collarbone fracture can lead to a dislocation of the ends of the fracture and thus to injury to the lungs. The result is often a pneumothorax.
This can cause pain and breathing difficulties. Heart problems and vascular problems can also always cause pain under the collarbone. Especially in the case of a heart attack, patients often complain of pain under the collarbone up to the left arm.
Pain in the collarbone and sternum
Pain in the collarbone and sternum can also be caused by different diseases. The collarbone is connected to the sternum. An incarceration in this joint can lead to pain in this area.
Fractures in the upper ribs can also cause pain in the clavicle and sternum. Pain can also trigger pleurisy (inflammation of the pleura). Those affected also complain of pain when breathing and coughing. In general, heart disease, especially a heart attack, and pulmonary embolism can also cause pain in the collarbone and sternum area.
Pain in the collarbone and shoulder
The collarbone represents a part of the shoulder joint. Therefore, injuries to the shoulder cause pain in the clavicle and shoulder. For example, a shoulder joint disruption (AC joint disruption) results in a torn ligament in the shoulder joint.
These ligaments normally hold the collarbone to the shoulder. The tear causes a step, which is also known as the piano key phenomenon. Pain in the shoulder and collarbone can also be caused by shoulder arthrosis. In this case, degenerative changes cause wear and tear and pain during movements.
