Pertussis (Whooping Cough): Diagnostic Tests

Pertussis is diagnosed on the basis of history, physical examination, and possibly laboratory diagnostics.

Optional medical device diagnostics -depending on the results of the history, physical examination, laboratory diagnostics, and obligatory medical device diagnostics– for differential diagnosis or to exclude complications.

  • Magnetic resonance imaging of the skull (cranial MRI, cranial MRI or cMRI) – if brain damage is suspected.
  • Computed tomography of the skull (cranial CT, cranial CT or cCT) – if brain damage is suspected.
  • X-ray of the thorax (X-ray thorax / chest), in two planes – if pneumonia (pneumonia)/pneumothorax (clinical picture in which air gets into the pleural space and thus impedes the expansion of a lung or both lungs; this leads to the fact that so the breathing is not or only limited available) is suspected.
