Progesterone gel Progestogel for the treatment of mastodynia has been approved in many countries since 1980.

Structure and properties

Progesterone (C21H30O2, Mr = 314.5 g/mol) exists as a white crystalline powder or as colorless crystals and is practically insoluble in water. It corresponds in structure and properties to the natural sex hormone.

Effects

Progesterone (ATC G03DA04) has progestogenic properties. It corrects a local progesterone deficit in the breast.

Indications

For the treatment of pain in the female breast area (mastodynia).

Dosage

According to the SmPC. The gel is applied locally to both breasts once daily in the morning from the 10th to the 25th day of the cycle and allowed to absorb. Hands should be washed before and after application.

  • Hypersensitivity
  • Breast cancer
  • Pregnancy, lactation

Interactions

Drug-drug interactions are not known.

Adverse effects

Possible adverse effects include local skin reactions. Rarely, systemic progestin side effects may occur.
