Prognosis | Medicines for epilepsy

Prognosis

1. generalized seizures: In grand mal epilepsies, seizure-freedom is achieved in about 50% of cases, in absences in about 25% of cases. The West and Lennox-Gastaut Syndrome, on the other hand, have a poor prognosis. 2. single focal seizures: Up to 75% of patients are seizure-free under drug therapy. 3. complex focal seizures: In about 33% of the patients seizures are stopped under therapy.

Summary

Epilepsy is a clinical picture which is caused by uncoordinated discharges of nerve cells in the brain and manifests itself in motor, vegetative, sensory, sensory or psychological complaints. Epileptic seizures are treated either with medication or by surgery. An operation (removal of parts of the brain, brain amputation) is only performed in very serious cases. In all cases, it is important to make an individual therapy decision and to avoid triggering a seizure.
