Prophylaxis | Femoral neck fracture diagnosis and therapy

Prophylaxis

In the prevention of femoral neck fractures, a healthy and conscious lifestyle with a balanced diet and sports is the main focus. Exercise strengthens the muscles and bones and there are fewer falls and fractures. A healthy diet is also important for the stability of the bone.

For older patients, the prevention of falls is a priority. The safe use of walking aids is essential for prophylaxis. In addition, cardiovascular diseases should be well treated to prevent falls from dizziness or fainting. Osteoporosis is a major risk factor, especially for women, and should be detected early and treated adequately to prevent femoral neck fractures.

Prognosis

It is difficult to generalize the prognosis of patients with femoral neck fractures. Many different factors play a role in the assessment. These include above all the age of the patient, but also concomitant diseases and lifestyle.

If a patient develops femoral head necrosis or infection, the prognosis for the function of the joint is rather poor. If the operation and follow-up care is carried out without complications, the patient can put minimal long-term stress on his or her joint.
