Prophylaxis

To prevent the spread of MRSA in hospitals, patient screening is now carried out before admission. Here, a questionnaire is used to record various risk factors for MRSA infection (for example, age and previous antibiotic therapy). Risk patients are then checked for an infection. In some European countries, however, hospitals have even started to take a smear test for MRSA in every patient admitted to their hospital. Since 2009, the detection of MRSA in blood or cerebrospinal fluid (liquor) in Germany is subject to the legal obligation to notify.
