Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SARS): Test and Diagnosis

1st-order laboratory parameters-obligatory laboratory tests.

  • Small blood count
  • Inflammatory parameters – CRP (C-reactive protein) or PCT (procalcitonin).
  • Electrolytescalcium, chloride, potassium, magnesium, sodium, phosphate.
  • Liver parameters – alanine aminotransferase (ALT, GPT), aspartate aminotransferase (AST, GOT), glutamate dehydrogenase (GLDH) and gamma-glutamyl transferase (gamma-GT, GGT), alkaline phosphatase, bilirubin.
  • LDH
  • Renal parameters – urea, creatinine, cystatin C or creatinine clearance if necessary.
  • Coagulation parameters – PTT, Quick
  • Pathogen detection via sputum, bronchoalveolar lavage, deep throat swab, nasopharyngeal aspirate, pharyngeal lavage, stool sample (two samples should be taken) – Pathogen detection by PCR, virus culture.
  • Pathogen detection by serology (IF, ELISA, NT); ideally paired samples should be available here, but a single test may also be indicative
