Sweating (Hyperhidrosis): Therapy

The therapy of hyperhidrosis (sweating) is carried out depending on the cause.

General measures

  • Observance of the general hygiene measures!
  • Frequent change of clothes (have spare clothes with you).
  • Wear loose-fitting clothes. The clothes should not be tight against the skin.
  • Use of deodorants (deodorants) that contain aluminum chloride or aluminim chloride hexahydrate. They help with mild cases of hyperhidrosis.
  • Aim for normal weight! Determination of BMI (body mass index, body mass index) or body composition by means of electrical impedance analysis and, if necessary, participation in a medically supervised weight loss program.

Nutritional medicine

  • Nutritional counseling based on nutritional analysis
  • Nutritional recommendations according to a mixed diet taking into account the disease at hand. This means, among other things:
    • Daily total of 5 servings of fresh vegetables and fruits (≥ 400 g; 3 servings of vegetables and 2 servings of fruits).
    • Once or twice a week fresh sea fish, i.e. fatty marine fish (omega-3 fatty acids) such as salmon, herring, mackerel.
    • High-fiber diet (whole grains, vegetables).
  • Other dietary recommendations depending on the cause of hyperhidrosis (sweating).
  • Selection of appropriate food based on the nutritional analysis.
  • See also under “Therapy with micronutrients (vital substances)” – if necessary, taking a suitable dietary supplement.
  • Detailed information on nutritional medicine you will receive from us.

Physical therapy (including physiotherapy)

  • Iontophoresis (iontophoresis; tap water iontophoresis, LWI) – In this procedure, the affected areas of the body (palms and/or soles of the feet) are held in two tubs filled with tap water. Electrodes are used to pass a mild direct current or pulsed direct current (in the 10 kHz range) through the water for 10-15 minutes to decrease sweat production by the glands. The procedure must be repeated daily initially (6 to 10 treatments). Long-term treatment is performed at one to four weekly intervals. The therapy can be performed at home. The therapy is effective for treating sweaty hands (hyperhidrosis palmaris) and sweaty feet (hyperhidrosis plantaris).
  • Fractional radiofrequency microneedling (FRM):Heat, as produced by FRM, can irreversibly destroy sweat glands.Indication:axillary osmidrosis (bromhidrosis)/excessive sweating and unpleasant odorPossible side effects:transient dysesthesias or paresthesias/transient sensory disturbances or numbnessComparison of the method with surgical removal of sweat glands showed no significant differences in the efficacy of the two therapies. CONCLUSION: FRM could be a good alternative for mild and moderate cases of axillary osmidrosis.
