The cost of the spiral

Synonyms

Intrauterine device (IUD), intrauterine system (IUS), mechanical contraception

Costs

The copper spiral costs about 120 to 200 € for an application period of 3 – 5 years, the hormone spiral about 250 to 350 € for an application period of 5 years. Both prices include consultation, examination and insertion. The costs for the consultation about the methods of contraception are covered by the health insurance, but the semi-annual check-ups can cost 20 to 40 €.

Costs for the insertion of a spiral

When inserting a contraceptive coil, the woman is faced with various costs which are not normally covered by health insurance. There are costs for education, insertion and material. With the copper coil, these costs amount to approximately 120 to 300 euros.

The hormone coil is somewhat more expensive at 250 to 400 Euros. Since the durability of the coils varies, the woman should inform herself about the prices and compare them. The first position check, which is done with an ultrasound device, is paid for by the health insurance company.

Costs for removing the spiral

A spiral must be removed after three to five years or sometimes sooner. When removing the spiral, the material costs for the spiral itself are eliminated. Only the actual work involved is included as a cost factor.

Depending on the type of spiral and individual factors of the woman, the costs for the removal are between 20 and 50 Euros. In most cases, these costs are not covered by health insurance. In the case of a removal that is necessary at an early stage for medical reasons, the health insurance company can partially cover the costs.

Costs for changing a spiral

Depending on the spiral, the spiral must be removed after three to five years, as it is then no longer sufficiently effective. If the woman wants to continue using the IUD, a new IUD can be inserted immediately afterwards. The procedure is therefore a combination of removal and replacement.

Depending on the spiral, the costs amount to 20 to 50 Euros for the removal and 120 to 400 Euros for the insertion. The woman usually has to bear the costs of the change herself. The health insurance companies only cover the costs in exceptional cases.
