Front musculature

At the front of the thigh are the muscles called extensor group, which stabilize the knee joint. This extensor group includes a small muscle, the sartorius muscle, and the large quadriceps femoris muscle. The sartorius muscle is also known as the “tailor muscle” because its functions enable the patient to sit cross-legged.

This muscle bends the hip joint as well as the knee joint and allows the thigh to be turned outwards (abduction) and the lower leg inwards (internal rotation in the knee joint). The largest muscle of the anterior thigh muscles is the quadriceps femoris muscle, a muscle with four heads. This means that the muscle is composed of four smaller muscles (rectus femoris, vastus medialis, vastus lateralis, vastus intermedius).

The function of the muscle is to bend in the hip joint and stretch in the knee joint. Consequently, it would not be possible to walk or stand without this muscle. The posterior thigh muscles, unlike the anterior ones, are called the flexor group because their main effect is to bend in the knee joint.

This group includes the Musculus biceps femoris, the Musculus semimembranosus and the Musculus semitendinosus, which influence both the knee and hip joints. The main effect is to stabilize and stretch the hip joint while standing. All three muscles cause a flexion in the knee joint and either a rotation inwards (Musculus semimembranosus, Musculus semitendinosus) or outwards (Musculus biceps femoris).

The politeus muscle is an exception in the case of the posterior thigh musculature, as it only affects one joint, namely the knee joint. At this point, like the other muscles, it provides flexion and turns the knee inwards. Another important muscle group is the adductor group.

This group of muscles generally brings the leg that is spread apart closer to the body in the hip joint and contributes to the stability of the joint. Depending on the position of the hip joint, the muscle group supports either flexion or extension of the joint. This muscle group includes Musculus obturatorius externus, musculus pectineus, musculus adductor longus, musculus adductor brevis, musculus adductor magnus and the musculus adductor minimus.

A further muscle of the adductors, the gracilis muscle, also flexes the knee joint and turns it inwards. Since the thigh muscles run in the area of the hip and knee, they have an effect on both the hip joint and the knee joint. 1. function of the thigh muscles on the hip joint:
