Therapy | Bloating after alcohol

Therapy

As a rule, flatulence after alcohol consumption does not require treatment. The excess gas formed in the intestine must escape, otherwise stomach aches may occur. If other symptoms occur, such as diarrhoea, care should be taken to ensure an adequate fluid intake and electrolyte balance.

In order to generally relieve the intestine, well-tolerated teas can be drunk and easily digestible food with a low fat content can be consumed. If the flatulence is very pronounced and puts a strain on the patient, he should be advised to limit his alcohol consumption or refrain from drinking. The patient should also observe carefully whether the flatulence occurs after drinking any alcoholic beverage or whether the symptoms are specifically related to a particular drink, for example beer. This should then be selectively omitted to see whether the flatulence occurs nevertheless.

Forecast

The reaction to alcohol is different for every person. If there is an increased level of suffering due to flatulence after alcohol consumption, the patient should limit his alcohol consumption. Then no further complaints are to be expected.

Prophylaxis

To avoid flatulence after alcohol consumption, there is no direct prophylaxis. The safest way is not to drink alcohol at all. Flatulence after alcohol consumption can be very stressful for the person concerned.

Already at night, an increased amount of gas can occur, which can cause an unpleasant feeling of bloating and flatulence, as well as occasional indisposition and even abdominal pain. To prevent this, it is first necessary to find out which alcoholic beverage is responsible for the flatulence. The best way to find out is to avoid certain types of alcohol.

If there is less or no flatulence, you can be sure of the cause and then avoid it. As the consumption of some types of alcohol simply causes more flatulence than others and an additional high-fat food promotes the development, it is also important to pay attention to the combination of foods. Alcohol causes a slowing down of the gastrointestinal motility and thus ensures that the food to be digested remains in the respective section for a longer time.

This promotes the development of flatulence. It is therefore advisable to eat an easily digestible diet that does not cause flatulence even without alcohol consumption. In addition, in cases of severe suffering, a reduction or renunciation of alcohol consumption should be considered.

In addition, highly carbonated beverages can also lead to increased flatulence. In order to avoid the odour-causing, foul-smelling flatulence after alcohol consumption, conscious attention should be paid to the combination of the type of alcohol and the food consumed. High-fat food, as well as cabbage and legume dishes, but also yeasty foods such as bread or cakes should be avoided.

In order to find out for sure what is causing the problem, it is advisable to keep a dietary diary. With this aid, you can then avoid foods that are suspected to be causative. At the same time, it should be noted that you should not slurp or talk a lot while eating, because this can lead to swallowing more air, which can also lead to increased flatulence.

If the exposure to smelly, foul-smelling foods is particularly high, in addition to the right combination of alcohol and food, consideration should also be given to reducing or avoiding them. To reduce flatulence in general, one can also resort to teas or dishes containing caraway or ginger. These contain ingredients that have a positive effect on digestion.
