Therapy
It is important to treat an inflammation of the glans correctly and in time. If this is not done, the inflammation can spread along the urinary tract and lead to urinary tract infections, bladder or prostate infections. The therapy depends on the appearance and cause of the inflammation.
In most cases, local treatment is sufficient. The most important basis for this is a thorough and appropriate intimate hygiene. This includes daily washing with clear water and then thorough drying.
If bacteria are the trigger, treatment is usually done with ointments containing antibiotics. Ointments with an active ingredient against fungi are also available. If no infection is the cause, an ointment containing cortisone can be applied to treat the inflammation.
If the local therapy is not sufficient, it may be necessary to take the medication as tablets. This is also recommended if diabetes mellitus is present. If no improvement can be achieved even by systemic therapy, this may be an indication of a malignant disease.
In these cases a tissue sample should be taken. In the case of recurrent inflammation of the glans, a narrowing of the foreskin (phimosis) is often the cause. In this case, surgical removal of the foreskin, a circumcision, is recommended. After this, no more fluid can accumulate under the foreskin and the susceptibility to infections is reduced.
