Therapy | Red spots on the glans – How dangerous is that?

Therapy

The treatment of a patient who notices red spots on the glans is always based on the underlying disease. If the red patches are due to irritation of the glans, creams and ointments can help to alleviate the symptoms. In addition, affected patients should refrain from sexual intercourse for a period of at least a few days.

Only in this way can the excessively stressed skin areas recover and regenerate.

If the red spots on the glans are caused by a fungal infection, a suitable therapy must be initiated immediately. In this context it is particularly important that the sexual partners are also treated.

Only the simultaneous therapy of both parties can prevent a mutual reinfection. Before the actual treatment of the genital fungal infection can be initiated, a smear of the red spots on the glans should be taken. In this way, the causative pathogens can be determined and a targeted treatment can be carried out.

As a rule, fungal red spots on the glans are treated by regularly applying a locally effective ointment. The ointments used are products belonging to the group of antimycotics (antifungal agents). This ointment can inhibit the growth and spread of the causative yeast fungus and kill the fungal cells present.

In very pronounced cases of genital fungal infection with red spots on the glans, antimycotics can also be taken orally (in tablet form). During the entire treatment period, the affected patients should keep the skin surface of the glans as dry as possible. For this purpose, after applying the locally effective ointment, a strip of gauze can be placed between the foreskin and the glans.

In addition, the factors that have promoted the onset of genital fungal infection with red spots on the glans should be medically clarified. Under certain circumstances, underlying diseases (e.g. a general immune deficiency) may also need to be treated. If the affected patient notices red spots on the glans caused by an inflammation of the glans, a locally effective treatment is primarily initiated.

Depending on the causative pathogen, various antibiotics or fungicidal creams can be used. Non-infectious inflammation of the glans is usually treated with ointments containing cortisone.

If red spots are found on the glans, a doctor should be consulted in any case.

The general practitioner can give initial indications as to the cause of the disease and will then refer you to a specialist colleague in case of doubt. In this case, specialists in dermatology or urology may be considered. If a sexually transmitted disease is suspected, a referral to a urologist is always made. Most patients go to a dermatologist or urologist on their own initiative if they notice notice noticeable skin changes on their genitals.

If reddish spots form on the glans, the exact cause should first be found out. Especially if the cause is an inflammation of the glans, symptomatic treatment with ointments or creams can be used in addition to treating the cause. In this case, the causes are not eliminated, but only the complaints, which often consist of burning and dandruff, are combated.

Nurturing and moisturizing creams are used, such as Bepanthen® Wound and Healing Ointment and Camomile Flower Ointment. If the cause of the inflammation is bacterial, antibiotic ointments are used. Very often an inflammation of the glans is also caused by fungi.

In this case, ointments that combat fungi would be used. The most common active ingredient used in this context is Canesten ointment. Once the exact cause of an inflammation of the glans has been determined, treatment should be started as soon as possible.

In addition to conventional medical measures, there are also some home remedies and alternative medical offers available, which are mostly used symptomatically for reddish skin changes on the glans. The use of camomile tincture is very successful. Here, for example, a linen cloth can be soaked with camomile tea or camillosan and then applied to the glans.

The camomile reduces irritation and ensures that the skin heals quickly. The camomile application should be done 1-2 times a day for about 10 minutes. Alternatively, a chamomile sit-down bath can also be performed.

Furthermore, the application of tea tree oil, which is applied to the reddish areas on the acorn, is said to be anti-inflammatory and healing. Tea tree oil is said to have a particularly good effect on balanitis simplex, the inflammation caused by external irritation. Since tea tree oil can also be very irritating to the skin, it should first be diluted before the liquid is applied to the glans.
