Irritation | Red spots on the glans – How dangerous is that?

Irritation

Particularly in men who have frequent intercourse, these red patches may be due to irritation of the sensitive skin surface of the glans. In these cases, however, the abnormalities are usually not accompanied by other symptoms and decrease significantly after a short time.

Fungal infections

Fungal infections are one of the most common causes for the development of red spots on the shaft of the penis and/or the glans. A fungal infection in the area of the penis should definitely be taken seriously and treated as soon as possible. Otherwise, there is a risk that the fungal infection will spread further and become dangerous.

Typically, the fungal infection of the penis is caused by so-called yeast fungi. These fungi are microorganisms that also occur in the normal flora of the skin and mucous membranes. However, it is important that the yeast fungi are in a state of equilibrium with other microorganisms (for example bacteria).

In this state of equilibrium the yeast fungi have no disease value and do not cause any complaints. However, if this already very sensitive equilibrium is disturbed and the yeast fungus suddenly multiplies, a pathological condition develops and the typical symptoms appear in the affected patients. The most relevant pathogen in this context is the yeast fungus of the genus Candida albicans.

Furthermore, the genera Candida tropicalis and glabrata play an important role in the development of fungal red spots on the glans. In most cases, the genital fungal infection of the male affects both the glans and the foreskin. The reason for this is the close anatomical contact of these two structures.Especially the regular unprotected sexual intercourse is one of the main risk factors for the occurrence of a genital fungus infection with red spots on the glans.

Furthermore, it can be observed that men who suffer from a pronounced narrowing of the foreskin are more frequently affected. Candida infections with red spots on the glans are particularly common in persons whose immune system is already weakened. The diseases relevant in this context include HIV and diabetes mellitus. The intake of cortisone-containing drugs or antibiotics can also promote the development of a genital fungal infection. Typical symptoms of a fungal infection are

  • Red spots on the penis (especially on the glans)
  • Local swellings
  • Pain when urinating
  • Purulent discharge from the urethra
  • Weeping bubbles
