Therapy | Thrombosis while taking the pill

Therapy

The basic therapy of thrombosis includes wearing suitable compression stockings and taking anticoagulant medication. The compression stockings prevent the swelling of the leg from increasing and increase the return flow of blood to the heart. This prevents further development of thrombosis and alleviates the symptoms.

The patient is also given heparin, an anticoagulant drug that prevents the patient from developing further thromboses. This usually does not resolve the existing thrombosis. For this purpose, a so-called fibrinolytic agent can be prescribed in cases of very severe thrombosis or pulmonary embolism, which breaks down the thrombus.

Alternatively, the blood clot can be removed from the vessel by surgery (see: Therapy for thrombosis). It is important that the patient is adjusted to an anticoagulant drug, for example Marcumar, after a few days. This must be taken for a few months.

If the thrombosis is actually caused by taking the pill, there should be a discussion about discontinuing the pill. Otherwise it is not unlikely that thromboses will occur again in the future. The woman should either stop taking the pill completely or at least switch to a preparation with a low risk of thrombosis.

Prophylaxis/Prevention

In order to avoid thromboses caused by the pill, it is recommended that you consult your gynaecologist extensively about which preparation is suitable. Not all pills carry the same risk of thrombosis. Preparations with a low risk of thrombosis are preferable.

Women who smoke or are overweight should not take the pill if at all possible in order not to further increase their risk of thrombosis. Otherwise, general measures should be taken to prevent thrombosis. These include, in particular, adequate physical exercise. This means that even on long journeys by plane, bus, train or car, you should always get up and walk a little so that the blood in your legs does not build up too much. Women who are at risk of thrombosis can be prescribed thrombosis injections before long journeys and can have them administered prophylactically.
