Tooth Mobility Analysis (Periotest)

Periotest (synonym: tooth mobility analysis) is a device that allows measuring the mobility of teeth or implants in the jawbone. It allows an objective evaluation of the condition of bone or periodontium.

Indications (areas of application)

  • Periodontal status (status of the periodontium)Incipient damage to the periodontium (periodontium) or failure of an implant to heal can be detected and treated at an early stage.
  • Progress controlsAfter a treatment, such as the supply of implants, orthodontics or therapy of a diseased periodontium, the success of the treatment can be controlled with the Periotest measuring device.X-rays, which represent a radiation exposure each time, can thus be dispensed with.
  • Determination of further therapeutic measuresA tooth is still firmly enough anchored, for example, to wear a bridge, can also be determined with the Periotest measuring device. Also the strength of implants in the jawbone can be determined.

The procedure

An electric plunger touches the tooth or implant under examination four times per second.

When the plunger hits the tooth, it is slowed down. The faster the deceleration, the greater the strength of the tooth or implant in the jawbone. The contact with the tooth is normally about one millisecond. Due to changes in the periodontium and the degree of healing of an implant, there are deviations from the standard time, which are recorded by the Periotest device.

As a result, a periotest value is obtained, which tells the following about the osseointegration (visible, direct, functional and structural bond between the organized, living bone tissue and the surface of a loaded bone implant) of implants:

  • – 08 to – 01: Implant well ingrown.
  • 00 to + 09: Verification required
  • +10 and more: Implant is not or not sufficiently osseointegrated (healed).

For tooth mobility, the following values are obtained:

  • – 08 to + 09: fixed
  • +10 to +19: palpable movable
  • +20 to +29: visibly mobile
  • +30 to +50: movable on lip pressure

Benefit

Damage to the periodontium can be detected early and tooth loss can be prevented. The success of a treatment, for example with implants, can be objectively verified. The Periotest procedure helps you to preserve your natural teeth for a long time and to achieve an optimal result when restoring them with implants. For a perfect smile – for life.
