Triamcinolone hexacetonide is commercially available as a suspension for injection (Triamject). It has been approved in many countries since 2014.
Structure and properties
Triamcinolone hexacetonide (C30H41FO7, Mr = 532.6 g/mol) is a prodrug of triamcinolone acetonide but not of free triamcinolone alcohol. Triamcinolone hexacetonide is hydrolytically activated and is poorly soluble in water because of the butyl acetate moiety.
Effects
Triamcinolone hexacetonide (ATC H02AB08) has anti-inflammatory properties. It has only mild mineralocorticoid effects.
Indications
- Persistent inflammation in one or a few joints after general treatment for chronic inflammatory joint disease
- Arthritis in pseudogout/chondrocalcinosis
- Activated osteoarthritis
