Upper abdominal pain as an indication of a miscarriage?
Pain in the upper abdomen during pregnancy is rarely an indication of a miscarriage. Miscarriage is more likely to be accompanied by pain in the lower abdomen similar to that of labour and vaginal bleeding. However, an impending miscarriage can also occur without vaginal bleeding.
Therefore, abdominal pain in pregnancy that persists for a long time should always be a reason for a medical consultation. Since the female body has to give the growing baby more and more space during pregnancy, abdominal pain is most often caused by anatomical conditions. The baby takes up more and more space in the mother’s abdomen, presses on her organs and can cause temporary pain.
In addition, the ligamentous structures and tissues around the uterus as well as the maternal musculature are put under great strain. Occasional abdominal pain is therefore normal and occurs in most pregnant women.
