Vagisan®

Introduction

Vagisan® describes a group of vaginal therapeutics of the Dr. Wolff Group GmbH. Vagisan® products in the form of creams, shampoos, capsules or vaginal suppositories are mainly used for vaginal dryness and repeated vaginal infections. Depending on the product, their effect is based on different mechanisms.

Vagisan® products containing lactic acid and lactic acid bacteria

Vagisan® products containing lactic acid or lactic acid bacteria are used to regulate the lactic acid content of the vagina and to promote healthy vaginal flora. The main area of application is therefore the after-treatment or prevention of chronic or recurrent (recurring) bacterial vaginosis (also aminocolpitis, bacterial inflammation of the vaginal mucosa). However, these products are not suitable for the treatment of acute vaginitis.

Vaginsan® against vaginal mycosis

Vagisan® is a brand name under which several products for female intimate hygiene are available. Some are used to prevent fungal infections of the vagina, others are used for therapy when an infection has already occurred. Vagisan Myko Kombi is a preparation consisting of a vaginal suppository and a vaginal cream.

The vaginal suppository contains clotrimazole and is used to treat vaginal mycosis. The cream is used especially to relieve itching and burning. A single application of the vaginal suppository with the anti-fungal active ingredient should be sufficient to treat a simple vaginal mycosis. The cream is usually applied over several days.

Vagisan® for vaginal dryness

Vaginal dryness is a common consequence of the menopause and the associated estrogen deficiency. This leads to vaginal atrophy (tissue loss), i.e. the regression of the mucous membrane. Other causes can also be medication, excessive intimate hygiene, smoking, breastfeeding or surgical procedures (such as removal of the ovaries before menopause).

Symptoms of vaginal dryness include vuvovaginal dryness, burning, itching and pain during sexual intercourse. It also poses a risk of vaginal infectious diseases. Treatment can include estrogens (estradiol, estriol, promestriene) as well as moisturizers such as Vagisan® moisturizer.

Flora of the vagina

A healthy vaginal mucosa is largely colonized by useful bacteria, the Döderlein rods (bacteria) named after their discoverer. These bacteria produce lactic acid to create an acidic environment (pH <4.5). In addition to them, other bacteria (such as E. coli and streptococci) are also found in comparatively small numbers.

Their excessive reproduction is prevented by the lactic acid production of the Döderlein flora. The vaginal milieu can be disturbed by a number of causes, above all excessive vaginal hygiene, foreign bodies, frequent sexual intercourse and the prolonged intake of antibiotics, but also surgical operations or childbirth. This leads to an imbalance between Döderlein rods and other bacteria.

Frequently, vaginosis remains asymptomatic and is not even noticed. However, the pH shift can also lead to an unpleasant odor (fluorine vaginalis) or ultimately to vaginitis (increased form of vaginosis). This is accompanied by itching, pain of a reddened mucous membrane and vaginal discharge.
