What can you do about it?
It is always recommended to treat constipation as gently as possible. The most natural way is to increase the amount of water you drink. If the baby is already drinking liquids other than breast milk, it is important to avoid unsweetened drinks.
It is also recommended to stimulate the peristalsis of the child. For this purpose, parents can do light gymnastics in the form of circular leg movements as when riding a bicycle with the baby. The effect is that the movement activates the intestine and additionally promotes blood circulation.
This exercise can be repeated several times a day for a few minutes. If this measure is not sufficient, a light massage of the abdomen can provide relief. For this purpose, the abdomen should be gently massaged with circular movements in a clockwise direction.
It is important not to exert strong pressure on the abdomen. The intensity of the touch should correspond to a light touch of the fingertips. Only if these measures have not led to success and the baby shows a clear impairment, vegetable means, milk sugar or suppositories should be used.
Not every delayed defecation is in need of treatment. Sometimes also to waiting behavior is sufficient. Cause for further measures should always be determined by the general condition of the baby. A happy and satisfied baby should therefore not be influenced in its digestive rhythm from the outside.
Home remedies
Household remedies are only effective against constipation when the baby is large enough to consume fluids and food other than breast milk. Then it is recommended to offer plums in every variation. It does not matter whether they are consumed in the form of juice, prunes or plum jam.
Their dietary fibres swell up in the intestines during the digestion process and thus stimulate the peristalsis. The plum juice is said to have the strongest laxative effect. This is due to the increased content of fruit acids.
If the baby does not like plums, another type of fruit such as apples can be used as an alternative. Only bananas are not suitable in case of constipation, as they thicken stool. Gentle household remedies are lukewarm teas, which should be drunk with every meal.
The lukewarm temperature particularly activates the intestine, as it optimally promotes the blood circulation of the intestinal mucosa. Which kind is drunk is to be rather neglected thereby. Rather it is about the increased liquid supply on the day. Tea varieties with caraway and aniseed have nevertheless proven to be particularly stimulating. They also have an antispasmodic effect and relieve flatulence.
