When do I have to tape? | Tap the metatarsal fracture

When do I have to tape?

The tape bandage is usually a supportive technique to ensure and support healing after fracture stabilization. It is not absolutely necessary to tape a metatarsal fracture. The situation is different for fractures of the toes.

If these are not treated surgically, a stabilizing tape bandage with classic tape can help to immobilize the toe with the fracture. A tape bandage is also useful in cases of fatigue, also to prevent fractures. However, taping the foot does not completely relieve the strain and can under no circumstances replace a plaster cast. If there are complaints during the healing process, a tape bandage can be very useful to give the fracture some stability. If there are deviations in the axis, a tape can be used to try to correct them.

How long must the foot be taped?

Since the tape should not be used until the fracture is already stabilized, the anal duration may vary. It is best to use the tape to support the foot until there is no more discomfort or pain. Then the tape should not be used any more to accustom the foot to the unsupported work.

In the case of slight axial deviations, corrective tapes can be used for longer periods of time. If the deviations are too severe, an X-ray check should be performed. This article may be of interest to you in this regard: “Midfoot fracture – healing time”.

How long does the tapeslge/can be showered with it?

A tape system can last up to 5 days without problems. The better prepared the skin under the equipment, the longer the tape will last. On parts of the body where you sweat a lot, the duration can be shortened because the adhesive will dissolve more quickly, especially at the tape ends.

It is possible to shower with a tape bandage without problems. However, the tape should be kept free of soap. If there is reddening of the skin or itching in the area of the tape bandage, the tape must be removed immediately. To ensure a longer hold of the tape, hairs in the area of the system should be removed. The corners of the tape should also be rounded off with scissors.
