When does the umbilical cord fall off?
After the umbilical cord has been cut off, a remainder of about 2-3 cm remains. This dries up over time, as it is no longer supplied with blood. This causes the umbilical residue to turn brown to brown-black and falls off on its own after about five to fifteen days.
In most babies, however, this is achieved after ten days at the latest. What remains is a small open wound which heals within a few days. This should be cared for to protect the wound from infection and to speed up the healing process.
