The following are the functions of zeaxanthin:
- It has an antioxidant effect, in which it is itself oxidized, thereby protecting cells from the cell-destroying effects of oxidative stress
- Zeaxanthin, together with lutein, is of particular importance for the protection against oxidation of the macula lutea (yellow spot) in the retina (retina) – macular degeneration -, the site of the sharpest vision: lutein, like the carotenoid zeaxanthin, is an effective filter for blue high-energy light. Thus, it protects the eye from oxidative destruction by light rays (photooxidative damage).
