Melatonin – what is it, what does it do and how and where can I get it?

Melatonin is a hormone that occurs naturally in the human body. It ensures a regulation of the sleep rhythm and thus has a great influence on the wakefulness of the human being. It is secreted from the so-called pineal gland, a part of the diencephalon, and causes a feeling of tiredness.

Accordingly, the release of this hormone occurs mainly in the evening and at night and decreases again in the morning. Insomnia can be related to a lack of melatonin, among other things. There are various factors that can influence this deficiency, such as sitting in front of a computer screen for long periods of time.If a melatonin deficiency is suspected, it is advisable to consult a doctor and have it checked. The hormones in the human body are subject to complicated regulatory cycles and should therefore only be substituted, i.e. given in the form of tablets, if there is sufficient suspicion of a deficiency. For this reason, melatonin tablets are only available on prescription from pharmacies.

Sleep disorders in children

Sleep disorders in children occur frequently in the course of development and can usually be treated very well. There are many different types of sleep disorders in children.

  • One of the most important aspects here is the so-called sleep hygiene.
  • It is important to make sure that a child sleeps sufficiently and does so at regular, equal times.

    This should ensure a minimum sleep period of 8 hours.

  • Among the factors that negatively influence children’s sleep are staying awake too long in the evening and playing on the screen. Therefore, playing outdoors in the evening is preferable, as it allows the child’s natural energy to be utilized. In addition, playing in the fresh air improves the blood circulation in the body.
  • If the child wakes up at night and cannot sleep, it is important that it is not kept awake too long.

    Nightmares may also be the cause of sleep disorders in children. It is therefore important to talk to the child about his or her sleeping behavior in order to be able to take further steps. For anxiety disorders, cuddly toys or a slightly open door can also help.
