Lymphogranuloma Venereum: Or something else? Differential Diagnosis

Skin and subcutaneous (L00-L99).

  • Hidradenitis suppurativa – misleading term because the disease does not originate from sweat glands but from sebaceous glands and terminal hair follicles; chronic, inflammatory disease at terminal follicles of skin envelope folds that can lead to marked scarring and disability [to be excluded at stage III].

Infectious and parasitic diseases (A00-B99).

  • Actinomycosis (radiation mycosis) [to be excluded at stage III].
  • Bartonellosis (cat disease) – infectious disease occurring mainly in South America, caused by representatives of the genus Bartonella and often lethal (fatal) [to be excluded at stage II].
  • Filarioses (synonym: filariasis) – various diseases resulting from infection with parasitic nematodes, filariae (representatives of the Filarioidea) [to be excluded at stage III].
  • Granuloma inguinale (GI; synonyms: granuloma venereum, donovanosis) – tropical sexually transmitted infection (“sexually transmitted infections”, STI) caused by the bacterium Calmmatobacterium granulomatis, which is primarily accompanied by ulcers (ulcers) (English “genital ulcer disease”, GUD) [to be excluded at stage I].
  • Genital herpessexually transmitted disease caused by the herpes virus [to be excluded at stage I + II].
  • Schistosomiasis (bilharzia) – worm disease caused by trematodes (sucking worms) of the genus Schistosoma (couple flukes) [to be excluded at stage II].
  • Syphilis – sexually transmitted disease [to be excluded at stage II]
  • Tuberculosis (consumption) [to be excluded at stage II + III]
  • Tularemia (rabbit plague) [to be excluded at stage II]
  • Ulcus molle (soft chancre) – tropical sexually transmitted infections (“STI”), which is primarily associated with ulcers (ulcers) (English “genital ulcer disease”, GUD) [to be excluded at stage I + II].

Circulatory system (I00-I99)

  • Genital lymphedema [to be excluded in stage III]

Mouth, esophagus (food pipe), stomach, and intestines (K00-K67; K90-K93).

  • Inguinal hernia (inguinal hernia/inguinal hernia) [to be excluded at stage II].
  • Crohn’s disease – chronic inflammatory bowel disease; it usually progresses in relapses and can affect the entire digestive tract; characteristic is the segmental affection of the intestinal mucosa (intestinal mucosa), that is, several intestinal segments may be affected, which are separated from each other by healthy sections [to be excluded at stage I + III]
  • Proctitis (rectal inflammation) [to be excluded in stage I]
