Connection between migraine or headache

Wisdom teeth start to grow comparatively late. Growth is not complete until the age of 25. If you get headaches during the growth phase of the wisdom teeth, this may well be related.

The teeth are located so far back in the mouth that the pressure can radiate into the head, or in the case of the upper teeth into the temple. In itself, the growing tooth may press on the neighboring tooth, or if the wisdom teeth have no counterpart in the other jaw, they may also grow beyond the chewing plane and interfere with chewing. The resulting pressure can lead to a general feeling of pressure in the head, similar to that experienced when grinding and pressing.

Influence on facial nerves

The wisdom tooth is not in direct contact with the facial nerve. The facial nerve is responsible for the sensation of taste on the tongue with part of its fibres. This means that if it is damaged, this can affect the taste and especially the mimic muscles that enable the movement of the face.

However, the lower wisdom teeth are often in direct contact with the nerve channel of the nerve that provides them and the remaining lower teeth, as well as parts of the lip with sensation. In addition, another nerve runs close to the wisdom teeth, the nerve that supplies the tongue with feeling. These two nerves can be affected if the wisdom teeth are removed. If they are irritated during the operation, the sensation can disappear temporarily and very rarely forever.

Can a wisdom tooth also be crowned?

A wisdom tooth can be crowned like any other tooth. In rare cases, the tooth can differ from the other teeth in its inner life, the pulp chamber. However, this usually has no influence on the crowning of the tooth.

If the tooth is firmly attached to the bone and does not show any damage that makes a crown impossible, this is a good therapy option to preserve the tooth. If the conditions look worse, it is often a question of cost-benefit whether a wisdom tooth can be “saved” or not.
