Contraindications | Pulmicort

Contraindications

Pulmicort inhibits the immune system. Therefore, this medicine must not be used if a disease caused by bacteria, viruses or fungi is present in the respiratory tract. This is made worse by the use of Pulmicort.

Caution is also advised in the case of liver problems, as here the active ingredient budesoside is broken down. If this is not possible, effects and side effects affecting the whole body will occur. There are indications that Pulmicort has a damaging effect on the embryo of a pregnant woman. For this reason, Pulmicort should not be used, especially in the first three months of pregnancy.

Side effects

As described, systemic side effects typical of glucocorticoids do not usually occur. However, local side effects may occur during treatment with Pulmicort. Since it inhibits the immune system to relieve inflammation and allergies, fungal infections of the mouth and throat can occur that almost never affect healthy people. One example is candidiasis.A general irritation of the pharyngeal mucosa with coughing and hoarseness occurs occasionally.

Interactions

Pulmicort strengthens the effect of antispasmodic agents against asthma. Certain medicines against fungal diseases and some antibiotics impede the breakdown of budesoside in the liver and thus increase its concentration in the blood. This can lead to side effects if used over a long period of time. However, for a period of 1-2 weeks this is clinically irrelevant.
