Duration of the application

Usually it is sufficient to use Floxal eye drops for 5-7 days. In some cases a shorter period of use is also sufficient. The maximum application period should not exceed 14 days. In individual cases, however, it should be discussed with the treating ophthalmologist over how many days the application should take place.

Can they also be used as ear drops?

Fluoroquinolones such as Ofloxacin can also be used to treat infections of the external auditory canal (otitis externa) in addition to eye infections. There are certain antibiotics that are available separately in the form of ear drops. For example Ciprofloxacin ear drops.Ciprofloxacin is an antibiotic belonging to the same group of active ingredients as Ofloxacin (Floxal).

However, Floxal is strictly speaking only approved for use in eye infections. However, it can also be used to treat an acute infection of the external auditory canal if no special eye drops are available. This is often accompanied by pain, which usually subsides rapidly under antibiotic therapy.

For this purpose, one or two drops are given into the affected ear with the head tilted. Most patients, however, have neither Floxal eye drops nor antibiotic ear drops available at home. In this case, the treating family doctor should be consulted.

Your family doctor can then prescribe specific ear drops. As an “emergency solution”, however, Floxal eye drops can always be used for infections of the outer ear.
