Homeopathic remedies for the treatment of shingles

In addition to home remedies, various homeopathic preparations are also effective in the symptomatic treatment of shingles. However, these should also be used exclusively to support drug treatment and do not represent an alternative. If there is no improvement, a doctor should be consulted in any case. Commonly used homeopathic preparations are Mezerum (D6) and Rhus toxicodendron (D12). While Mezerum is particularly suitable for very severe pain, which occurs mainly at night and when in contact with water or when touched, Rhus toxicodendron is mainly used for stabbing and burning pain.

Prognosis

About 20% of shingles patients develop post-zosteric neuralgia. It manifests itself particularly frequently after infections and usually affects older and/or immunocompromised patients. A pre-existing polyneuropathy, e.g. due to diabetes, can also be another factor in the development of post-zosteric neuralgia.

A spontaneous regression of post-zosteric neuralgia within one year exists in every second patient and in every fourth patient a therapy leads to a decrease. However, the variety of therapeutic methods shows that the treatment of this form of chronic pain is not easy. Therefore, the main focus is on the early detection of shingles to prevent the development of post-zosteric neuralgia.

Pain reoccurs after years

In rare cases, the reoccurrence of pain is still possible months or years after shingles. This pain is also attributed to post-zosteric neuralgia. They are caused by the severe nerve damage caused by the virus as well as a lack of regenerative capacity of the nerve.

These pains should also be treated to prevent further persistence of the pain. In very rare cases, shingles can also recur in patients with a severely weakened immune system (e.g. tumor diseases, HIV, multiple sclerosis, very old people). Then the newly occurring pain stimulus can be the first symptom of shingles.
