Household remedy against wasps

Especially in the warm and dry summer months the wasp population is increased. The danger of wasp bites increases. Therefore the prevention of wasp stings is of great importance.

To keep wasps away from the house, insect screens on windows and doors help. However, there are also various ways of keeping wasps at a distance and minimizing the risk of wasp stings outdoors. In general, food and drinks should be covered to avoid attracting wasps.

Offering an “alternative meal” in a place away from the dining table, for example in the form of windfall fruit or sweet drinks, can also be a way to keep wasps away from the dining table. The smell of essential oils is avoided by wasps. Therefore, it can be helpful to put a few drops of an essential oil in a bowl of water to repel wasps.

The smell develops most intensively when this water-oil mixture is then warmed up a little. Various essential oils can be used to ward off wasps, such as lemon oil, lavender oil, mint oil, tea tree oil or eucalyptus oil. As an alternative to the water/oil mixture, a few drops of the oil can be applied to textiles or the skin to keep wasps away.

In this case, however, the odor disappears relatively quickly. Wasps do not like the smell that basil gives off. A good household remedy to keep wasps away from the outdoor dining table is to place a basil pot on the table.

Tea tree oil is one of the essential oils. Wasps do not like the smell that essential oils give off. Therefore, it can be helpful to put a few drops of tea tree oil in a bowl of water and heat it to deter wasps.

Alternatively, just a few drops can be applied to the skin. Another alternative is to buy scented candles with essential oils. When lit, these candles should keep away wasps effectively and reliably.

Similar to basil, wasps also avoid the smell of tomato plants. Placed on or around the table, they are said to be a good defense against rebellious wasps. Lavender, like basil and tomato plants, is also said to be a good household remedy to keep wasps away because they avoid the smell of these plants.

Some branches of lavender spread on the table are said to have a good repellent effect against wasps. Some freshly cut garlic cloves are also said to be a relatively effective repellent against wasps. Wasps do not like the pungent smell of garlic and therefore avoid it.

A plate with a few freshly cut cloves of garlic can therefore be an effective measure against wasps during a barbecue. Wasps generally avoid intense odors. This way, they can be kept at bay with essential oils.

But also the lighting of incense sticks should have an effective effect to keep wasps away. It is said that wasps do not like the smell of copper. Therefore, placing a bowl of copper coins is considered a household remedy to keep wasps away.

However, there are no reliable sources for this; it rather seems that copper coins are not a reliable household remedy for effective wasp control. The burning of coffee powder is also a relatively frequently mentioned household remedy in wasp control. To keep wasps away, some coffee powder should be put in a bowl.

The powder should then be ignited so that it burns. The roasting aromas released are said to keep wasps away. Wasp researchers do not think much of this agent and rather advise essential oils or incense sticks.
