How to treat a swollen cheek?
The therapy goal of the swollen cheek is to relieve the swelling so that the accompanying symptoms also subside. Depending on the cause, this can be achieved with different methods.
- An inflammatory swollen cheek, which is red and warm, can be treated with a local cold application and anti-inflammatory medication.
It is basically irrelevant whether it is a mouth rinse for local application or a tablet for systemic application. What is important in the case of an inflammation is that not only the symptom – the swelling – is treated, but also the cause, such as the infected mucosa defect.
- In the case of dental problems, it is often necessary to rehabilitate the affected tooth in order to eliminate the inflammation.
- If an abscess is present, an opening followed by irrigation is often the necessary therapy. The first point of contact is the dentist.
As a household remedy against a swollen cheek, local cold application is a good idea.
The cold reduces the blood circulation in the swollen area so that the overheating of the cheek is alleviated. In addition, the contraction of the vessels due to the cold causes the volume in the swollen tissue to be slightly reduced. Nevertheless, this method should be considered short-term and should be used with sufficient breaks to allow the helpful inflammatory cells to reach their site of action via the blood vessels.
It thus only serves to improve symptoms. Sage tea can be drunk as a supporting measure and also used to rinse out the mouth, as it has an anti-inflammatory effect. Chamomile tea is optional.
Furthermore, it is important to eat food that is easy to chew and swallow to prevent further irritation of the cheek. Mostly, however, people do this intuitively. Household remedies are generally only to be used for slight swelling and should be supplemented with medication if the swelling lasts longer.
