Therapy for hyperinsulinemia depends on the cause.
General measures
- Aim for normal weight!Determination of BMI (body mass index, body mass index) or body composition using electrical impedance analysis and, if necessary, participation in a medically supervised weight loss program.
- Review of permanent medication due topossible effect on the existing disease.
Conventional non-surgical therapy methods
- In the event of hypoglycemia (low blood sugar), glucose must always be substituted.
- Exists a diabetes mellitus disease → optimization of the drug setting, if necessary also weight reduction and sports.
- If congenital hyperinsulinemia → drug therapy (eg, diazoxide or nifedipine).
Surgical therapy
- If insulinoma is present → surgical removal of the tumor.
Regular check-ups
- Regular medical checkups
Nutritional medicine
- Nutritional counseling based on nutritional analysis
- Nutritional recommendations according to a mixed diet taking into account the disease at hand. This means, among other things:
- Daily total of 5 servings of fresh vegetables and fruits (≥ 400 g; 3 servings of vegetables and 2 servings of fruits).
- Once or twice a week fresh sea fish, i.e. fatty marine fish (omega-3 fatty acids) such as salmon, herring, mackerel.
- High-fiber diet (whole grain products).
- Observance of the following special dietary recommendations:
- Intermittent fasting (Latin “intermittere”: to interrupt; synonyms: Intermittent fasting; “every other day diet” (EOD; every other day diet); “alternate day fasting” (ADF)) – because insulin resistance is lowest in the morning, this should involve skipping dinner rather than breakfast.
- If type 2 diabetes mellitus is present, the following special dietary recommendations apply:
- Meals should contain 15% protein, <30% fats and 45-60% carbohydrates.
- Avoidance or reduction of monosaccharides (single sugars) and disaccharides (double sugars).
- Selection of appropriate food based on the nutritional analysis
- See also under “Therapy with micronutrients (vital substances)” – if necessary, taking a suitable dietary supplement.

Sports Medicine
- Endurance training (cardio training) and strength training (muscle training) for weight reduction in overweight or obesity and / or in the presence of diabetes mellitus disease to reduce blood glucose levels and improve insulin sensitivity.
- Preparation of a fitness or training plan with suitable sports disciplines based on a medical check (health check or athlete check).

Training
- If necessary, diabetic training
