Hypromellose (Hydroxypropylmethylcellulose)

Products

Hypromellose is commercially available in tear substitutes in the form of eye drops. It is also present in tablets as a pharmaceutical [excipient>].

Structure and properties

Hypromellose (methylhydroxypropyl cellulose) is a partially -methylated and -(2-hydroxypropylated) cellulose. It exists as a white, yellowish white or grayish white powder or as granules and is practically insoluble in hot water. In cold water, it dissolves to form a colloidal solution.

Effects

Hypromellose (ATC S01XA20) moistens the eyes. It replaces or supplements the natural tear fluid. It has thickening and emulsion stabilizing properties.

Indications for use

As an active ingredient:

  • Insufficient tear secretion
  • Dry eyes
  • Keratoconjunctivitis sicca (Sjögren’s syndrome)

As excipient:

  • As a binder for the preparation of tablets.
  • For the production of vegan capsule shells.
  • For medicinal products with a modified release of active ingredients.
  • For the manufacture of film-coated tablets.

As an additive:

  • For food (E 464).

Dosage

According to the professional information. The drops are usually given into the eyes several times a day. See also under Administering eye drops.

Interactions

There are no known interactions. However, other eye drops should be administered at a time interval.

Adverse effects

The drugs are usually well tolerated. Occasionally, local discomfort and allergic reactions may occur.
