Interactions

If Ebrantil® is taken at the same time as alpha-receptor blockers, other vasodilators or other antihypertensive drugs, or if there is a condition of volume deficiency (e.g. diarrhea or vomiting) or if alcohol is consumed, Ebrantil® may result in increased blood pressure reduction. If cimetidine is taken at the same time as Ebrantil®, the urapidil serum level is increased, which can also increase the effect. A concomitant intake with ACE inhibitors is currently not recommended due to the lack of available studies.

Type, duration, dose of application

The retarded hard capsules should be taken morning and evening unchewed with a little liquid (for example, half a glass of water) at mealtimes. The doctor decides how long Ebrantil® should be used. Normally, treatment with Ebrantil® is a long-term therapy. Unless the doctor prescribes a different dose, the usual morning and evening dosage of a retarded hard capsule of Ebrantil® in the prescribed potency applies.

Medical measures for overdose

By elevating the legs and volume substitution (drinking and infusions), excessive blood pressure reduction can be improved. If these measures are not sufficient, slowly vasoconstricting preparations can be given and, while controlling the blood pressure, injections can also be given intravenously. In very rare cases it is necessary to administer catecholamines (e.g. epinephrine), which can then also be administered intravenously for faster onset of action.

Side effects

As with all drugs, side effects are possible when taking Ebrantil®. Occasionally heart palpitations, acceleration or slowing of the heartbeat (tachycardia, bradycardia), a feeling of pressure or chest pain (similar to angina pectoris) have been observed. Nausea is common when taking Ebrantil®.

Occasionally vomiting, diarrhea or dry mouth have been reported. Fatigue is also a side effect of Ebrantil®, as is the very rare accumulation of fluid in the tissues (edema). When examining blood values, an increase in liver-specific enzymes and a decrease in platelet count can rarely occur when taking Ebrantil®.

In contrast, dizziness or headaches have frequently occurred when taking Ebrantil®.Occasionally sleep disturbances and, very rarely, general restlessness, permanent erection, increased urge to urinate or increased urinary incontinence occur. Occasionally a stuffy nose, allergic symptoms (e.g. reddening of the skin, skin rash, itching) are observed. Orthostatic dysregulation (drop in blood pressure when changing position) may also occur occasionally. If the patient observes side effects associated with the medication while taking Ebrantil®, the treating physician must be informed quickly so that he or she can adapt the treatment to the individual patient.
