Is a revision of a root canal treatment painful?
During a revision of the root canal treatment, there should in principle be no pain on the tooth. The dental nerve was removed during the first treatment of the original root canal filling. Nevertheless, an anaesthetic can be applied to the surrounding tissue and bone. The surrounding structures can be very sensitive and painful, especially if there is renewed inflammation. Inflammation at the root tip of the tooth often manifests itself as a painful pressure or biting pain when chewing.
Aftercare during a revision
After a revision of the root canal treatment, regular follow-up examinations should be carried out. An X-ray is often taken during these checks. On the basis of the x-ray image, the decrease of the inflammation can be observed.It may take some time to see the success of the treatment, as bone can only form again after the inflammation at the root site has subsided.
Bone regeneration may take a little more than three months and a final result can be observed only over a period of up to four years. However, the pain of the inflammation disappears much earlier. In order to complete the revision of the root filling, a tight seal is necessary. This can be done as a composite filling or as a crown, depending on how the tooth was previously treated and how much healthy tooth structure is left.
Costs of an audit
The costs of a revision of the root canal treatment are usually not covered by the statutory health insurance companies, so there are additional costs depending on the insurance. Due to the increased technical effort involved in a renewed root canal filling and the additional use of a microscope, the treatment can cost between 500.00 and 1200.00 Euros. The number of root canals and the difficulty of the situation in the tooth are taken into account in the billing.
The materials used also have an influence on the amount of costs. Since the effort and the course of treatment vary from tooth to tooth, you should consult your dentist individually about the possible costs of the revision.
