Kidney pain associated with physical activity
As a rule, kidney pain is not motion-dependent. This is a criterion for how kidney pain can be distinguished from back pain. While kidney pain cannot be provoked by movement, back pain generally occurs more severely with movement or with certain movements.
So if left-sided back pain occurs in the area of the kidneys, the back should definitely be examined. Here, deformations of the spine (for example scoliosis) or a muscular imbalance can cause complaints. If kidney pain on the left side is relieved by movement, a possible cause is a kidney stone or a stone in the ureter, which was the cause of the pain and has come loose by the movement.Recommendations of our editorial staff: Pain in scoliosis, ureteral stone, kidney stones
Kidney pain during pregnancy
During pregnancy a massive enlargement of the uterus can be observed. Especially in the last third of pregnancy, the uterus presses on practically all organs in the lower abdomen and pelvis, including the urinary organs. The bladder and ureter in particular can be affected.
This also easily explains why pregnant women often have to urinate. By narrowing the ureters, the urine can be backed up into both kidneys and cause an expansion of the renal pelvis. The physician then speaks of “urinary retention“.
As a result, severe, colicky kidney pain occurs. Due to anatomical conditions, the right kidney is more frequently affected in many cases. However, kidney pain in the left side can also be observed.
Affected women also often feel the urge to urinate, but cannot urinate. The doctor can easily diagnose urinary retention with the help of an ultrasound machine. If uncramping medication does not provide relief, it is possible to keep the ureters open by using splints.
If left untreated, the condition can have serious consequences, so you should always consult a doctor. As urinary retention increases during pregnancy, pregnant women are also at increased risk of developing an inflammatory process in the kidneys, such as inflammation of the renal pelvis. You should therefore drink enough during pregnancy and protect your kidney region from the cold.
