Low Blood Pressure (Hypotension): Therapy

General measures

  • General measures that strengthen the circulation may contribute to improvement:
    • Slowly getting up in the morning
    • Pressure on the abdomen; worked in 52% of patients (systolic blood pressure dropped by less than 10 mmHg on average)
    • Alternating showers
    • Brush massages
    • Sports (see below sports medicine) are recommended swimming, running and tennis.
    • Sufficient fluid intake (see below nutritional medicine).
    • Sauna visits
  • Limited alcohol consumption (men: max. 25 g alcohol per day; women: max. 12 g alcohol per day).
  • Limited caffeine consumption (max. 240 mg caffeine per day; this corresponds to 2 to 3 cups of coffee or 4 to 6 cups of green / black tea) – coffee and tea have a blood pressure-increasing effect, but only in the short term!
  • Aim for normal weight! Determination of BMI (body mass index, body mass index) or body composition by means of electrical impedance analysis and, if necessary, participation in a medically supervised program for the underweight.
    • Falling below the BMI lower limit (from the age of 19: 19; from the age of 25: 20; from the age of 35: 21; from the age of 45: 22; from the age of 55: 23; from the age of 65: 24) → Participation in a medically supervised program for the underweight.
  • Review of permanent medication due topossible effect on the existing disease.
  • Avoidance of environmental stress:
    • Heat (sweating!)
  • Travel recommendations:
    • Before starting a trip participation in a travel medical consultation!
    • Note: Patients with hypotensive regulatory disorders are prone to heat exhaustion and are particularly uncomfortable in warm and humid climates. Tropical destinations should therefore be avoided.

Nutritional medicine

  • Nutritional counseling based on nutritional analysis
  • Nutritional recommendations according to a mixed diet taking into account the disease at hand. This means, among other things:
    • Daily total of 5 servings of fresh vegetables and fruits (≥ 400 g; 3 servings of vegetables and 2 servings of fruits).
    • Once or twice a week fresh sea fish, i.e. fatty marine fish (omega-3 fatty acids) such as salmon, herring, mackerel.
    • High-fiber diet (whole grains, vegetables).
  • Observance of the following special dietary recommendations:
    • Drinking 480 ml of water within five minutes in the morning; worked in 56% of patients (systolic blood pressure dropped by an average of less than 12 mmHg)
  • Selection of appropriate food based on the nutritional analysis.
  • See also under “Therapy with micronutrients (vital substances)” – if necessary, taking a suitable dietary supplement.
  • Detailed information on nutritional medicine you will receive from us.
