Numbness of the fingertip
When fingertips are numb, and this also applies to other skin areas on our body, the most common cause is a nerve disorder. In the case of incarcerations or injuries where a nerve is damaged, this manifests itself in the symptomatology of numbness in a corresponding area of skin. This is referred to as a sensitivity disorder.
The nerve that is most frequently disturbed is the ulnar nerve, which runs along our “funny bone”, with which most readers have probably already made acquaintance. Polyneuropathies, i.e. other special diseases of our nervous system, which can be caused by an unhealthy lifestyle (overweight, excessive alcohol consumption), are another cause of a numb finger. In addition to this, an anatomical constriction can occur, which can be summarized under the term carpal tunnel syndrome.
If you experience numbness in the fingertip, don’t hesitate to consult a neurologist who will physically examine the conduction velocity of the affected nerve, which is usually reduced. Surgical treatment can help in most cases. In a few cases a vitamin replacement therapy can also lead to success.
Tingling in the fingertip
If the fingertip tingles, this often happens before a finger becomes numb, or it happens temporarily if a nerve is pinched (for example, when lying on the hand for a long time). If the tingling disappears after a few minutes or hours, it is temporary and not serious. However, if it lasts for several days and an injury is also the cause, this may indicate a more serious situation.
The cause, as in the case of numbness, is also nerve damage caused by direct external influences (broken bones, cuts, falls), or by years of damage to the organism in the form of an unhealthy lifestyle. For example, nerve damage as a result of diabetes (polyneuropathy). In addition, an anaemia, magnesium deficiency or excess potassium or a slipped disc can also cause a tingling sensation in the fingertip. Since the list of possible causes for a tingling in the front finger is very long, it is all the more important to consult a specialist. A detailed examination is necessary, which can only be carried out by a qualified doctor.
