Nutrition during pregnancy: What to eat, what to avoid?

Many pregnant women are uncertain and confused about nutrition during pregnancy due to the many different kinds of advice and prohibitions. Especially when it comes to coffee, there are sometimes different recommendations and there are also special dietary guidelines for complaints such as heartburn or more difficult diagnoses such as gestational diabetes.

Introduction

In general, a varied Mediterranean diet with lots of vegetables, fruit and wholemeal products and occasionally lean fish or meat can be recommended. As with everyone else, sweets and especially fatty foods are not forbidden, but can only be eaten in small amounts. In consultation with the doctor, certain food supplements containing folic acid, iron or vitamin B12 are recommended, which are particularly important during pregnancy. Of course, there are also some foods that should be avoided completely during pregnancy.

These foods should be avoided

In general, only well washed and cooked food should be consumed during pregnancy, and in particular, should be avoided: These foods may cause serious complications such as listeriosis or toxoplasmosis. In order to consume sufficient omega-3 fatty acids, pregnant women are advised to eat fish at least 2 times a week. Sea fish species such as tuna should be avoided because of the possible heavy metal contamination.

As mentioned above, smoked fish is also not recommended. Of course, alcohol and other drugs as well as any kind of smoking should be avoided completely. Drinks containing caffeine or quinine, for example some lemonades, can stimulate contractions in larger quantities and are therefore only harmless in small amounts.
