Pain | Ovarian cysts

Pain

A cyst on the ovary rarely causes pain. Some women find that they experience constant pain during sexual intercourse. This may be because the cyst on the ovary, when it reaches a certain size, is displaced by sexual intercourse or irritated by the minimal displacement of the female reproductive organs. The bursting of the cyst on the ovary can also cause pain, which can sometimes start very suddenly. In general, a cyst on the ovary can also cause pain in the abdominal area, although this is rarely the case and mainly affects patients with polycystic ovarian syndrome.

Pregnancy

During pregnancy, a cyst may develop in the ovary. This cyst is often a corpus luteum cyst, which produces the female sex hormone progesterone. Since this hormone is urgently needed during pregnancy to maintain the pregnancy, it is important that this cyst is not removed during pregnancy.

Even after pregnancy, due to hormonal fluctuations, a cyst may develop in the patient’s ovary. This can be removed if it causes pain or menstrual problems. If the patient discovers a cyst on the ovary during pregnancy, it should not be removed if at all possible, as this could damage the baby. In a few cases, in the so-called polycystic ovary syndrome, the patient cannot become pregnant due to multiple cysts on the ovary. However, this is only very rarely the case with a “normal” cyst on the ovary. However, a patient who wishes to become pregnant should have the cyst cleared in the ovary to ensure that the cyst will not cause any problems before or during pregnancy.

Desire to have children

If a patient wishes to have a child despite a cyst on the ovary, it is very important to have the cyst examined in detail by a gynaecologist. In most cases, a patient can have a child without any problems despite the presence of a cyst on the ovary, but it is possible that the pregnancy may be affected by the cyst. For example, if a cyst produces hormones, these hormones may prevent the patient from becoming pregnant.

It is possible that the patient cannot have children due to polycystic ovarian syndrome. Often, patients who have an unfulfilled desire to have children come to their gynaecologist and then find that a cyst in the ovary has a severe impact on the desire to have children. In this case, it is advisable to have the cyst removed, as it is often possible for the patient to become pregnant after the cyst has been removed.

However, some patients can still become pregnant without any problems even if they have a cyst in their ovaries. Whether a patient can and should pursue her desire to have a child despite having an ovarian cyst depends on the location and size of the cyst. It is very important to consult a gynaecologist before pregnancy and get individual advice.
