Plague: Symptoms, Complaints, Signs

The following symptoms and complaints may indicate plague:

Bubonic plague (bubonic plague)

Symptoms

  • High fever
  • Chills
  • Cephalgia (headache)
  • Limb pain
  • Painful lymph node enlargement, especially inguinal (groin), axillary (armpit), and cervical (neck) lymph nodes

Pneumonic plague

Symptoms

  • High fever
  • Chills
  • Cephalgia (headache)
  • Fatigue
  • Cough
  • Bloody sputum (hemoptysis; hemoptysis)
  • Dyspnea (shortness of breath)
  • Tachypnea (accelerated breathing)
  • Chest pain (chest pain)
  • Abdominal discomfort (abdominal pain)
  • Nausea (nausea)/vomiting
  • Pulmonary edema (accumulation of water in the lungs)
  • Cardiovascular failure

Plague sepsis

Symptoms

  • Fever
  • Tachycardia (heartbeat too fast: > 100 beats per minute).
  • Fatigue, lethargy
  • Abdominal discomfort (abdominal pain)
  • Nausea (nausea)/vomiting
  • Confusion
  • Splenomegaly (enlargement of the spleen)
  • Hepatomegaly (liver enlargement)
  • Bleeding from the skin and/or organs
  • Shock, cardiovascular failure
  • Renal failure (ANV)
  • Ileus (intestinal obstruction)
  • Pestmeningitis (meningitis)
